Pop Psychology for Overthinkers and English Learners 💭
🇮🇹 Italian version below
Hello language lover 💬
Maybe you've seen our latest reel about a phenomenon called *therapy-speak or pop psychology: words born in clinical or therapeutic contexts that become part of everyday speech*, often simplified or reinterpreted.
But do you know how we first started reflecting on this? Because… we use them too (oops!) 👉 in our Instagram bio we described ourselves as language learning sidekicks for overthinkers and under-speakers.
Overthinker is a perfect example: originally describing a cognitive process linked to anxiety and rumination, today it's become an almost endearing, ironic way to talk about yourself: "I'm such an overthinker!"
From the couch to memes 🛋➡️📱
Words like *triggered, toxic, boundaries, gaslighting* have moved from psychology textbooks to memes, to chats with friends, to Instagram bios. It's what some have called "the tiktokification of language".
Meanings don't always stay the same, but this mix of therapy and pop culture says a lot about how we talk about ourselves and others.
🎙 As the podcast The Rise of Therapy Speak puts it:
"These are actual concepts. As it is transferred onto social media it becomes kind of simplified, flat, and extended and applied to all sorts of wild ways."
We talked about *ADHD, depressing, traumatic and anxiety* in our video, but here are a few more common ones:
- OCD → from obsessive-compulsive disorder to organized and picky with details "I'm OCD with my desk being tidy."
- Boundaries → from interpersonal boundaries to saying no with zero explanations "I need to set some boundaries with my coworkers."
- Toxic → from manipulative behaviors to a catch-all word for unpleasant experiences "My relationship with my boss is toxic."
- Gaslighting → Someone mistaking conflict for abuse, or calling you a gaslighter because you've expressed an opinion they don't like.
🪞 "Where is the line between unravelling a taboo and draining a word of its value?" And why does it matter?
As the New Yorker writes: "First, over-applying the term might dilute its meaning, robbing people who have experienced legitimate trauma of language that is already oftentimes too thin. And, second, invoking 'trauma' where 'harm' might suffice could play into the hands of people who despise and fear vulnerability. [...] There's a reason that the most fluent speakers of the trending jargon tend to be wealthy and white. The language of suffering often finds its way into the mouths of those who suffer least."
What does this have to do with language learning? 🌱
For us, this is a crystal-clear example of how language moves with culture: words are never neutral, they live in the contexts where we use them.
"It only makes sense, then, that the language of psychology has seeped into the rest of our lives; psychology itself is entwined with the rest of our lives."
Learning English today also means learning to navigate these nuances.
From overthinking to action ✨
We know starting something new can feel scary, especially if you see yourself as an overthinker: performance anxiety, the "I'll think about it" excuse, the "I'm not ready yet."
👉 That's exactly why we created *Leaft it up*, our mini-group course:

Ciao Language Lover 💬
👉 nella bio di Instagram ci siamo definiti language learning sidekicks for overthinkers and under-speakers.
🎙 Come dice il podcast The Rise of Therapy Speak:
